I hate to bring up the "t" word, but tax time is upon us. I usually do mine in February. That would give you plenty of time to sew up an organizer to brighten up the task! This one has loads of pockets and can be sewn using your favorite color scheme. Then you might even enjoy doing paperwork. Get the pattern here.

Feline Friday

So I really have been sewing this week, just no pictures to show for it yet. I've been organizing my stash and planning future projects. This week's cat is birdseed. I had fun arranging him in my backyard and then waiting for birds to come. Unfortunately, I could not stare out the window all day. I missed the feast.

I don't know if squirrels or birds took apart my cat. We decided to let Cloud finish the job. I call it "Rodent's Revenge".

He enjoyed the irony of it.

Here is a tutorial for fabric fortune cookies! Great for new years and also for Valentine's Day. I will be sewing some later today for sure. Actually it is also my birthday today so I always feel like this is my personal new year starting. I refuse to do any chores today!

Feline Friday

I sewed this Color Me Cat close to 10 years ago and I've made a bunch since then as gifts. This one's ears have seen better days. It is plain broadcloth or muslin, stuffed, about 18" tall. I always include Crayola washable markers because they are the most reliable for washing out. My kids love drawing on their cats and then sending them through the washer so they can do it again! Color Me Cat is great for 2-10 year olds for playing with and drawing on; then as teenagers they can use permanent markers and get all their friends' autographs.

I sewed Color Me Cat, Jr. this morning. He is 10" tall. I made more pronounced ears on him too. I just free-handed the shape- I think it adds character. Remember to add seam allowance. Stitch around twice to reinforce the seam. Clip the curves to the stitching before turning. Stuff and sew the opening shut.

2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge with SewCalGal

SewCalGal is offering a sew along for Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) here . There will be monthly practices to do and experts to help you learn and improve your skills. This is not an actual class, but a very doable challenge. I'm excited! Here is my January assignment completed and I am ready for more!

I started with a 12"x12" quilt sandwich of fabric and batting I had on hand. I was having so much fun, I did another sandwich until my thread ran out.

I found that controlling my speed was difficult at times and that I got the best results when I didn't go too fast or too slow (with my foot pedal and my hand movement).

I used regular sewing thread because it was what I had on hand. I was inspired by the heart shaped leaves so I cut up my smaller sample and made valentines!

Feline Friday

On Friday 13th, I figured we all might need some good luck. My daughter received this Japanese Lucky Cat as a gift. I think it is really cute, so I used it as my inspiration for today's Feline Friday project. The original is only 3" tall and ceramic. I absolutely love marzipan and I actually had a can, so I made my own version of Lucky Cat. The details are sprinkles and gel icing. My daughter, who is taking Chinese in school, did the writing. Not easy using a toothpick and working that small! I hope Lucky Cat brings you a fortuitous day!

SWAP or Sewing With A Plan

At my neighborhood American Sewing Guild Meeting yesterday, we were treated to an explanation and showing by Audrey who is very talented at garment sewing. It was very inspiring and makes so much sense to sew this way! SWAP is actually a contest you can enter, but you can also do it just for the reward of having a wardrobe that actually works. Seeing Audrey's examples, I was impressed by the details and the workmanship, and the fact that they all came from her stash! My stash mainly consists of pieces too small for a garment. Guess I'll have to go shopping!

First, evaluate your activities and lifestyle. What do you actually need? Then plan using your stash with tested and tried patterns. Make a story board with pictures and swatches of what you will sew. A good way to start is with an inspiration print, then take colors for other pieces from it.

Organize fabric into containers with coordinated outfits, and sew one container at a time. A versatile wardrobe could consist of 2 pairs of pants, 2 skirts (one solid, one print), 6 tops (matching and coordinating) and 1 jacket. You could of course do fewer pieces for a vacation wardrobe or a fitness wardrobe etc.

Feline Fridays

Welcome to Feline Fridays! I have been inspired by Noah Scalin and his make something everyday idea explained in his book 365. I got the book for Christmas and I was immediately excited about the possibilities. I tweaked the idea a little, in that I will be creating cats each week and posting them on Fridays. I was not sure I could keep up an everyday commitment so this is a nice compromise. I will still be posting my sewing projects, reviews, tutorials etc. the other days. I chose cats because, well, it is pretty obvious it ties in with my blog's name. I plan on exploring other mediums as well as fabric to keep my creative juices percolating!

Collaging has been on my mind lately, so the first Feline Friday project is collaging on small notebooks. I used bits of things I've collected over the years: calendar pics, music, a tag off a gift, etc. I added a small pic. on the back of each so it is not forgotten. Then I coated the front and back with mod-podge . My cat, Emma, is inspecting the results.

Happy New Year to everyone! Doing what I usually do at the beginning of a new year- I look back over the old one. The most popular pattern for 2011 was the Gig Bag ! Lots of musical sewing enthusiasts and friends out there. My most recent release was the Chatelaine, to hold sewing tools . It is too new to be the top seller yet, but I have great hopes for this year. Most of my sales come from the USA, but I'd like to also thank my customers from England, Australia, Canada, Poland and other points around the globe! I couldn't do what I do without any of you so thank you for reading my blog, checking out my etsy shop , and telling your friends about me. I will have a new announcement on Friday but for now, my wish for you all is a happy, prosperous and healthful 2012!

The Handy Pocket

Great as a gift- can be any size to fit keys or a phone etc. I make them in two finished sizes 7"x4" and 5"x3". To make one: cut 2 pieces of pre-quilted fabric (include seam allowance). Stitch a zipper on, using a zipper foot. At the same time, stitch on trim. There will be fabric behind the zipper. Cut out behind the zipper. Add a small hanging loop (see above left). The photos above show the front and back of the same piece.

Place the back and zipper piece, right sides together. Unzip the zipper. Stitch around the outside edges. Clip corners and turn right side out.

Add a colorful carabiner so you can hook it to your beltloop, backpack, purse strap etc.

1611 Gown

I was not aiming for historical accuracy went I put this outfit together for a recent 400th Birthday Tea. But I do think I was in the ballpark at least. The skirt is actually from my colonial gown. The top was originally my mom's, but since I think breathing is important, I left it unbuttoned and added a white blouse underneath.

Nativity for Small Children

This is a pre-printed panel to construct a Nativity scene that is perfect for young children to play with. No trims or buttons- just sew and stuff.

Here they are finished. Last year my cats kept stealing the baby Jesus, but we always managed to find him.

Logo Tote Makeover

This tote came to me as one of those freebies with a business logo stamped on the front. Seeing an opportunity, I dug out an embroidered sewing machine patch and some sewing themed cat fabric and got to work. I bordered the patch with the fabric to make it large enough to cover the original logo.

I had fun adding some machine stitching. Now I've got a tote I know I'll use and it was mostly free!

Nifty Teenie Kleenie Holder

This makes a great small gift, easy to sew too! Start with 3 pieces of fabric 6 1/4"x 4 1/4" and 2 pieces 4 1/4"x4 1/4". Press 4 of the pieces in half (wrong sides together) as shown above.

Layer the pieces kind of like how you might reclose a cardboard box, with all the flaps overlapping. The striped fabric shows this. All of the folds should point towards the middle and the raw edges should be even with the unfolded rectangle. Right sides together. Sew completely around the edges.

If you like, you can use a 3"x5" piece of paper to stitch around.

Trim the excess off. Then pinch the corners and stitch across as shown below. This should create a box corner.

Box corners as seen from the underside. Turn right side out and slip in a tiny package of tissues.

Emma, The Escape Artist

Emma is the sister on the right. She is the Cat Singer. Alice and Emma are sisters we adopted about 4 years ago from our back alley. They didn't run from me when I went to pick them up. Emma has always been a little skittish though. Yesterday she gave us a real fright. I realized at lunch that I hadn't seen her for a couple of hours. Not too worried because the cats usually take an afternoon nap. I figured she'd come out for dinner. By dinner we were getting concerned. With flashlights we looked in every closet and under beds. She never goes outside, so she had to be in the house somewhere. Calling her and cat treats didn't work. Panic was setting in. We went up in the attic and looked everywhere. I was really afraid she had gotten stuck in the walls. I was imagining horrible things by then. Trying to stay positive, I tucked tearful kids into bed that night. In the morning I woke up and found Emma sleeping peacefully on the sofa! Where did she go?! She was perfectly fine, no cobwebs stuck to her. I wish I could speak cat. We are so happy she is back!

Needle Weaving a Purse Flap

This is the Chameleon Handbag by Shirley Adams of The Sewing Connection. It is a great bag with interchangeable flaps so you can coordinate outfits etc. The body of the bag is an embroidered suede-like upholstery fabric.

I used a variety of yarns to needle weave a flap. You have to make your weaving really tight together. I fused interfacing to the back of the weaving before lining and piping the flap.

I wanted to showcase a few of my favorite buttons. The flap attaches with velcro to the purse back, and with a magnetic snap in front. Colonial Ball Gown

Here I am in a gown that I made for my mom and then altered so I can wear it. I had to replace the stomacher. I added the fabric flowers and the cream sleeve details to disquise my alterations. I wore this to a ball at the beginning of November.

Aprons from Pre-Printed Vest Panels

I recently ran across some pre-printed vest panels. I didn't think I'd wear them as vests, but maybe as aprons. I don't have all the steps pictured here (I was in a rush to get them ready for the bazaar). Basically, I used the vest back as the apron top and the vest fronts as the apron lower half. I had to trim off the shoulders. I used the same arm shape. After trimming as needed to fit together, I sewed the 3 pieces together. The fabric was a lightweight, so I lined the entire apron (making it reversible too!). The photo above shows the wrong side after the lining has been sewn on (right sides together). The ribbon ties were inserted and sewn at the same time. I turned the whole thing right side out through a small hole I'd left open.

Then I edge stitched all the way around, closing the turning hole at the same time.

I like that they are heavy enough now to really protect your clothes. So dig through your stash and see if you have any pre-printed panels waiting to be sewn! Actually, I've often thought it would be cool to make something using the panel as yardage and having the directions showing too! An interesting thought for another time...

Lovely Lace

I love lace in all its delicate forms. I don't wear much, but I'd like to. I've just never thought of myself as a ruffles and lace gal. Here is an exhibit, "Lost in Lace" , that promises to be anything but traditional. Here is another photo . Of course I love lace wedding cakes . There are lots of types to choose from. Lace dresses currently in fashion (not really into see-through, but the red undies really make an impact!). Lacey looks for resort 2011. I think lace is always classic and in style to some degree, like the Little Black Dress. Come to think of it, I don't have a LBD but I do have a lacey Little Navy Dress. Haven't had the chance to wear it yet, but looking forward to it when I do!

A Chatelaine was said to be the lady of a large chateau or an 18th century chain to hold the house hold keys and tools, I am calling my neck sewing tool pouch , a chatelaine- because it sounds better! It is very comfortable to wear, and handy with 5 pockets and built in pin cushion.

Jeans into a Chatelaine

I love a good challenge! My local American Sewing Guild chapter had a denim challenge at our annual meeting. You had to take a pair of jeans and make something from it. They didn't specify a size, so I used 12 month old baby jeans. They had nice embroidery already on them.

This was all that was left.

I constructed a chatelaine to hold my sewing tools. There were already plenty of pockets, so I didn't follow my pattern, but I did take the general idea of it.

I added the heart and button in the left picture above. I also added some fabric from a denim skirt as the backing and the neck section.

There are 7 pockets (the lower right is a flap, but no pocket). It was a bit difficult sewing through all the layers on the side seams. If I were to make another one, I would use slightly larger jeans like size 18 months. Then I would cut off the bulkiest parts. I am quite pleased with the results, plus I won 1st place for the accessories category!

New Chatelaine Pattern- keeps your most used sewing tools handy!

A chatelaine was the mistress of the chateau and/or keeper of keys and household tools. I just finished this pattern to sew one yourself! The chatelaine features 5 pockets and a pin cushion. I load mine with scissors, flashlight, screw driver, post it notes, pen, pencil, pins, needles, thimble, bodkin and a seam ripper.

It has been a real lifesaver when I teach classes. I was always ending up at the opposit end of the room from my tools. It would be quite handy for any kind of craft really. There are 2 safety straps on the 2 bottom pockets to keep tools where you need them!

After reading my blog, here are 5 things you might not guess about me.

1- I LOVE Dr. Who on BBC America. Can't get enough of him.
2- My favorite foods- pizza, salad and ice cream!
3- So you know I love sewing, but I actually love all kinds of crafting, drawing and creative stuff.
4- I volunteer a lot. 2 different schools, youth group, weblos, SPCA, teach Sunday School, Christmas Mom etc.
5- In spite of the name of this blog, I love birds too, and all animals. I am pretty much a nature/ animal lover except I do draw the line at biting insects. Can't say I like them much at all.

Harriet Hargrave

I went to an excellent talk by Harriet Hargrave sponsored by my local American Sewing Guild. It was a 2 day workshop but I was only able to attend the first day. I learned so much though! Harriet has written many books about heirloom machine quilting. One thing she stresses (and I agree) is to always make a sample block first. Try out your thread, needle and pattern etc. first, then only when you have all the elements right, start the project. It saves so much time and fabric later. She covered setting up your sewing table (correct height etc.), correct thread, getting tension adjusted etc. It was interesting to hear her take on quilters as opposed to piecers. Quilters plan the design of a quilt with an eye for where the quilting will be shown to its best advantage. People who prefer piecing- the quilting design takes a backseat. Heirloom quilting is all about texture. Harriet stressed the idea that "the more mediocre quilting you do, the better your quilt looks. The less mediocre quilting you do, the more mediocre your quilt looks." So if you don't think you are great at it (and who is starting out anyway?), then cover all the space with quilting and your mistakes won't be as noticeable! She had examples illustrating this too. Wonderful speaker to listen to, if you get the chance, see Harriet Hargrave in person.

Hanging Shoe Storage

A shoe storage solution was way over due when I decided to sew a new one. This is my old one that I made 22 years ago from leftover fabric. I think I randomly chose the size because it holds 4 1/2 pairs of shoes. 4 1/2 !?

The new and improved version holds 8 pairs of shoes. The back and front is a cotton print and the pockets are a brown upholstery fabric. This coordinates with the dark wood and blue/green quilt and curtains.

The whole thing hangs from a wooden dowel. It is so nice to have my shoes off the floor. Easier to sweep now and I'm not tripping over or stepping on them any more. My husband's reaction was "you have a lot of shoes!". Oh no. I also noticed that I have very boring shoes- 3 pairs of black, 3 pairs of brown, and 3 sneakers. I think Stacy and Clinton of What Not to Wear would have a lot to say about that!

New Seat Cushions!

I am on a roll fixing up the house! I love quick, easy projects with impact. The kids and husband complained the chairs were uncomfortable and hard. I sewed 4 seat cushions for our kitchen table from fabric and ribbon I got off the free table at a Sewing Guild meeting. Love the Free Table! Basically just a pillow with ribbon on 2 corners. I boxed the front 2 corners.

I stuffed them with several layers (3 maybe) of leftover batting. The print will hopefully hide food stains. Now no one can complain about sitting at the table to eat!

A New Lampshade

My lampshade on my bedside table was old and gross and falling apart. It was bringing me down every morning to wake up and look at it. So I thought, I'll just rip the fabric off and recover it. I ripped and the whole thing fell apart! Apparently it was stiff fabric with no metal frame. My husband came to the rescue and made a frame from wood slats. I had this piece of embroidered linen left over from this lined tote bag. I basically just hot glued it to the wood frame.

I especially love it turned on! Now I smile every morning (once I can pry my eyes open) when I see my new lamp shade!

Framed Pin Cushion

Here is a neat idea I saw over on Spincushion. The Frame of Mind Pincushion got me thinking about this lovely frame I bought at a yard sale. I used an Asian embroidered black satin for the cushion because I thought it went well with the opulent frame.

Fall Fashion Sewing List

Happy Beginning of Fall and Autumnal Equinox! I love this time of year. We usually go camping. I can go outside again without a swarm of mosquitoes attacking me. The kids are back in school so I now have a little more time to sew. I've noticed a few things that keep appearing in a variety of stores-
cowl necks, poncho/ ruana, shirtwaist dresses, peasant blouses, bat wing tops, animal prints, bold colors, metallic, jewelled, velvet, faux fur.
According to Pantone Color Institute, these are the hot fall colors . Not what I usually think of as fall colors.

Star Fish Wall Hanging

As summer comes to an end, here is a Star Fish Wall Hanging to remind us of the sea. Beena created the beautiful star fish in the center. I received the fabric back in May. The border came completely from my stash! They are all upholstery fabrics that I think go well with Beena's fabric. The back and binding is a cotton with gold fish outlines, also from my collection. It is 24 1/2"x25". I haven't decided whether I will sell it, keep it or give it as a gift. For now I am enjoying it on my sewing room wall, where it makes me smile and reminds me of home!

Charlene Phillips does a great job of it, however, in her book "The Sewing Machine Attachment Handbook". She starts out with a brief history, choosing a machine and then attachments and how to use them. Lots of color pictures and tips in the 140 pages. I know I don't use all my attachments to their fullest so I'm hoping this book will help me. If you own an older machine, Charlene's book will be especially helpful. She includes how to use a buttonholer. I found this antique box of machine attachments and this handbook explains how to use them with my Singer Featherweight from 1950. In case you were wondering- the black circle in the lower left corner above- its a stocking darner!

I was really excited to be able to attend a trunk show by Jerri McKee of Moonlight Design Quilts . She makes beautiful pieced and quilted jackets on top of sweatshirts. She sells instructions and kits. I forgot my checkbook, but picked up lots of inspiration.

As my kids get older, I thought I might actually find it easier to sew. Not the case. I think it must be my mindset, because I find myself playing short-order cook all afternoon. I love my kids and want to spend time with them! This time every year though, I start feeling really anxious because I haven't sewn anything for weeks! I am driven to create and when I can't, it is very frustrating. School starts back in 2 weeks and shortly after, my sewing classes will start too. I'm looking forward to this new beginning. In some ways, the beginning of school each fall feels like January 1st to me. A time to reset intentions and goals. A time to clear out deadwood and get back to (or closer to) what I really want to be doing. Starting in 2 weeks, I'll get to sew again for a few hours each day. The rest of my day will be spent enjoying my kids, helping with homework, driving kids places, housework, cooking and dish washing etc. How do you fit sewing into your life?

Here is Alice, lounging on a quilt I made from scraps I had in my stash. She is NOT allowed to lounge on anything for customers! This quilt is 45"x45". I started with the middle piece. I used the colors of the middle square to inspire the rest of it. Here are the instructions . Alice is about 4 years old. I rescued her and her sister from our back alley when they were about 6 weeks old. They were the only kittens that didn't run from me!

This Mystery Quilt is "Guilty as Charged!" by Debbie Caffrey. For anyone not familiar, when you start a mystery quilt, you have no idea what the finished one will look like (hence, the mystery of it). I started this back in January. Each month I got a new set of directions. Most of the time I was only about a month behind. I finished it in July and we just had the big reveal party this weekend. I was really glad I didn't know what this would look like because all the small pieces and the size of the finished quilt probably would have intimidated me. This was the first of this type of quilt I've made. Usually I just make them up as I go along! The border does go all the way around, it just didn't all fit in the picture. I chose all batiks. Having monthly deadlines helped keep me on track. I will hopefully bind it by January. The last step was the hardest- putting it all together. I really enjoyed the process and would definitely sign up to do another one! Check out your local quilt shop to find a mystery quilt offering. Next up: the other mystery quilts at the party!

Kermit's Fashion Show circa 1977

Kermit and I go way back- when I was a budding fashion designer and he was, well, a frog. I was 10ish when I made my beloved friend this wardrobe. My mom found his clothes not long ago and I knew he needed a photo shoot.

Here he is in his birthday suit. You can see that with his large belly and skinny legs (I say this with utmost affection), fitting was tricky.

He is dressed for his Hawaiian vacation in shorts and a native print tunic.

Kermit goes western (or should I say Vegas) in gold chaps and a hat.

I molded the cardboard and then spray painted it gold.

His floral vest (he is very secure with his masculinity), actually has a dart in the neck for fit. I think the rickrack adds something special too.

He has many accessories. He enjoys wearing his suspenders and tam.

The tam even has a fabric button sewn on top.

Every well dressed frog needs a pair of double knit trousers. Kermit is sporting a hand knit scarf with his.

My grandfather wore ties all the time so Kermit has 6 ties in his collection.

A day at the beach anyone? Terry cloth swim trunks make frogs everywhere green with envy!

His vest even has pockets.

When he goes to the spa, he is looking good in a monogrammed robe and slippers.

Kermit, a frog of many talents, plays the bagpipes while wearing a kilt.

Detective Kermit gives a nod to Sherlock Holmes in this coat and hat.

That hat was not easy!

I have not sewn any of the quilts yet, but I really like Karen Snyder's Fat Quarter Fun. The projects look fairly straight forward with clear instructions. Each quilt has a choosing fabric, cutting, piecing, assembling the top, adding borders, backing, and finishing sections.

She shows two versions for each quilt, making it easy to visualize different color schemes and sizes.

A Feel for Color Exhibit by Sally Barker

I recently saw this exhibit at the Children's Museum of Richmond. Sally Barker recreated famous paintings as quilts full of texture for the visually impaired. All of the quilts, roughly 20" (just an estimation!) were hung low because it was a children's museum after all. I enjoyed the visual impact and then I went around again with my eyes closed so I could appreciate the tactile aspect. Sally Barker not only used different fabrics, but she also used cardboard or something to make some areas recessed and others more prominent. It was fun to actually be encouraged to touch the quilts because usually it is hands off! Here are my favorites:

Easy T-Shirt Fix Up

So my daughter had this pink t-shirt that I really like (cute shoes!). She out grew it and, with her permission, I cut the front off. I centered it on top of a white t-shirt and stitched it down. This would be great for covering up stains or just for enjoying an out grown shirt.

Multicolor Knit Cape or My Cape of Good Vibes

I sewed this many years ago (15 years maybe) out of knit scraps, just for fun. Here it is displayed next to an instrument my husband made. Here are more of his guitars.

Emma is helping me spread out the cape. The shape was dictated by the size and shape of the scraps.

Here is the other end. I couldn't get the whole cape in the picture.

I simply overlapped the fabric pieces, zigzagged and then I trimmed any excess. That way it looks tidy on both sides.

Here is the back or inside. The binding was attached with a zigzag also. Knit doesn't unravel, so the raw edges aren't a problem.

The appliques are all from the same print knit. I think they tie it all together. It was really fun and free to sew. You could use the same technique to make smaller scarves (I did that too).

Easy Kid Projects

My son and I did this several years ago (he was probably 5). I had some scrap fabric laying around (imagine that!). He arranged the fabric squares and I simply stitched them down with him on my lap.

He enjoyed arranging the fabric and then later playing with the finished blankie.

This little cutie is by my daughter (again several years ago-8 years old?), sewn from scraps. I love him! The fabric actually looks like he has a mustache!

Pattern Review: Butterick 5495 Knit Top

I love this top! I usually have good results with Butterick patterns and this is no exception. Instructions are easy to follow and the top goes together very quickly. I made a size smaller than my measurements instructed me too (oops, picked up the wrong size!). But I love the results and get loads of compliements. My daughter even wants to borrow them!

I used a Norma Kamali slinky rayon knit for the one above and a different Kamali knit for the long sleeve version below. I also made a green polka dotted sleeveless top.

I have to admit I skipped the stay stitching steps and several other steps too in the name of speed. It worked fine. Sewing knits doesn't have to be hard or scary, in fact, I used a straight stitch for all of these.

Recycled Dress into Sarong Skirt

I had this dress (sorry I forgot to take a picture of it before), that I wasn't wearing anymore. It was boxy on top, buttons up the front and gathered long skirt. Not in style anymore and actually I wore it while I was pregnant (9 years ago!). Time for a remake. I cut the skirt off and saved the real shell buttons for another project. I sewed one pocket shut. Now I had a large rectangle with a hem and 2 sides finished off (button plackets without buttons). I hemmed the top edge and bunched up one corner and secured it. I added an inside button that uses an existing buttonhole when it is wrapped.

I added elastic to the back waist to pull it in a little. See inside view above and the back view below.

I had this lovely shell inlaid silver leaf pin to help hold the overlap shut.

An easy sarong to wear this summer that is way more attractive than the old maternity dress!

Ham Bag Hat!

My husband works in the garage in all kinds of weather, making guitars and ukuleles. In the summer, to keep the sweat out of his eyes (and keep the sawdust out of his hair), he wears Ham Bag Hats. This started a long time ago and yes, it was really the muslin bag that hams come in. He has finally worn out/lost all his ham bags, so I made him some new ones.

The basic shape is how we remembered it to be- slightly asymmetrical. I cut out 2 pieces, serged them together and that was it.

He uses the "tail" to clean his glasses with!

Adventure Time Hat

My son loves the show "Adventure Time" on Cartoon Network. The main character always wears a white hat with ears, so I chose a fleece out of my stash.

I just guessed at the size, since he was in school when I made it. I drew directly on the fabric.

I added a couple extra layers in the ear area to make the ears stand up.

Then I cut a hole for his face, serged the edges and it was done! I love a quick project like this and he loves it!

Pam Harris wrote this great article on how to organize yourself to get more projects done. I keep notebooks everywhere for idea collecting like she suggests. Mine are full of clippings, drawings, and ideas for projects. I like how Pam takes it further suggesting you periodically go through all your ideas and make a crafty plan for the projects you want to get done this month or year, and then schedule it! I call this a Cabin design because it is based on a log cabin block. Easy to sew. Use up your scraps!

Civil War Anniversary- A Personal/Sewing Story

This is Horatio Cornick Hoggard (1846-1919), my great, great grandaddy. Now politics aside, this is interesting on a personal/sewing level. And by the way, I had relatives on both sides of the war. I'm related to Robert Gould Shaw, portrayed in the movie Glory by Matthew Broderick. Its a great movie showing how Shaw lead the Civil War's first all-black volunteer company against prejudice on both sides. Worth seeing. Back to Hoggard though. He is shown here wearing two uniforms, one on top of the other. On the back of the photograph is this letter from Hoggard himself to his son, years later.

"This picture was taken a few days ago from an old daguerreotype, which I had taken in Petersburg, Va. in the later part of Dec.1863, on my return trip from my home on Broad Creek Princess Anne Co. Va. which was then (and had been in the enemies lines) since May 1862 when we evacuated Norfolk. I left camp near Orange Court house on Dec. 7- with an 18 day furlow, went home, and remained there 8 days, and returning arrived at Camp Xmas eve night, the very night my furlow expired. The suit of clothes I have on, was bought at Peter Smith's Store on Main St. Norfolk, of Mr. Wm. Hall, by my Sister Margaret, who secured the cloth, and trimmings under her hoop skirts, and carried it home past two Union Soldier guards without being detected, cut it out, and made the suit (without a pattern) and made it for me, and while it did not fit quite as well as a Tailor made suit, it was worth much more to me and was very comfortable. I also carried out two extra hats (one in the other you will notice) one for my brother Thurmer, and one for N.F. Bill whom I left in camp- beside my inside pockets were filled with socks and hankerchiefs for three. The Union Soldiers kept guard on the river in front of our home while I was there (patroling the river) but they never knew that I was ever home, and although Lucy (our cook) was there, and knew it, she never reported me."

I think this shows a very personal, private peek at people during the war.

This story along with many others is published in the Virginian Pilot- Voices of the Civil War book.

Patriotic Quilts

In honor of Armed Forces Day- Patriotic Quilts! Actually, any quilt in red, white and blue could be considered patriotic. With that in mind, these reversible drink coasters could be included. I've been wanting to sew a large wall hanging. It would be really easy using flip quilt instructions. Robert Kaufman has some armed forces and flag prints. A selection of red, white and blue fat quarters could be used in a patriotic quilt. A quilt made of bandanas in red white and blue would be pretty. I just bought a very unusual bandana from Walmart for $1.00. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I might need to go back and buy enough to make a quilt!

Thimble Round Up

Thimbles are extremely helpful for protecting your fingers during hand sewing. Apparently they are very, very old. Here is a brief history of thimbles. The Fingerhut Museum in Creglingen, Germany is the only dedicated museum in the world. I find this hard to believe! Everybody has thimbles, even the Cherokee Museum has a very colorful one. You can buy a Royal Wedding- Will and Kate commemorative thimble too. Here are State Thimbles. Nancy's Notions carries some cute thimbles. There is even a Museum of thimble holders and items holding thimbles. What about functional thimbles though? Clover thimbles is a good place to start. To find just the right size try here. And, in case you didn't know, thimbles are supposed to be worn on the middle finger of the dominant hand (or where ever works best for you!).

Maryse recently purchased my weekend bag instructions and wasted no time getting to work. I love the owl fabric and how she added a fancy machine stitch below the piping!

This is her second bag. A change of fabrics completely changes the look.

Sweater Remakes- Laptop Cozy

Recently, as I was cleaning up my sewing room, I came across a couple of felted wool sweaters. Perfect for a laptop cozy! A crew neck and a cardigan, neither one large enough for the project, so I used both.

I just cut and sewed what seemed like the right size. It is great using sweaters because they stretch and are very forgiving if the size isn't exact. I added a pocket and a flap out of the cardigan sweater. The buttons were from the cardigan also.

I thought buttoning and unbuttoning 5 would be tedious, so I made only 3 functional. Since the flap is felted and won't unravel, I just stitched it on without edge finishes- super easy.

I was on a roll, so I made sock cozies for my daughter's camera, phone and nintendo!

I made them narrower at the open end so they would be snug and not slip out. My daughter (11yrs) just rolled her eyes at me when I showed them to her, but I know she secretly loves them!

The Royal Wedding-Will and Kate

I was busy getting kids ready for school so I missed the vows , but tuned in to see a very happy married couple leaving the church. William and Kate looked so relaxed as they rode off in their carriage! My son, 8 years old, was interested to see that the choir boys were wearing the exact same ruffled neck outfit that he wears in the choir in Virginia. My kids also remember going to Colonial Williamsburg , VA and riding in a horse drawn carriage similar (though a bit less opulent) to the one Queen Elizabeth rode in after the wedding. I think Prince William and Princess Kate looked so elegant together- he in his Red Irish Guard uniform and her in the dress designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. I thought the bridesmaid's dress was gorgeous, but unusual in white. Not sure why they chose white, but it did look good. A lot is being said about how Kate's dress is similar to Grace Kelly's dress. Understated, elegant and timeless with a moderate train. Princess Diana's wedding dress influenced gowns in the 80's and I expect we will see wedding gowns from today on to have the same silhouette as Kate's. The Halo Tiara by Cartier was modest but beautiful- worn by Queen Elizabeth and her mother.

Loved all the hats and fascinators. Some of the fascinators seem to defy gravity, perching on the side of the head- how do they do that? I love wearing hats, but mine are usually straw summer sun hats. I'm inspired!

I also loved how Kate seemed to say on the balcony "oh wow" when she saw the crowd. Then 2 kisses! The crowd control was very impressive. The weather seemed to be just right. All in all I think it went beautifully for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Best wishes for a long and happy marriage!

Sewing is Earth Friendly!

I think sewing with found fabric (old sheets, clothes etc.) really boosts creativity and refashioning clothes definitely saves money and who doesn't want that?! Whenever my fabric collection starts bursting out of the drawers, I challenge myself to only sew from my stash, no new purchases until I have room. This goes for my closet too. I have reached that point again. I'm currently sewing a quilt with scraps of upholstery fabric given to me by a friend. I can't turn down fabric! Anyway, I have no idea what this quilt will look like, I'm making it up as I go.

Book Review: Home Made Simple

I love the show on TLC- Home Made Simple. Most Saturdays I try to watch because it always inspires me to get up and rearrange, clean, organize and/or create something new! I received this companion book as a gift. It contains chapters on organizing, celebrating, recipes, gardening, and decorating.

In one section it recommends adding purple accents to a room to promote imagination, creativity and problem solving. Sounds like a great color for a sewing room!

The projects and recipes they feature in the book (and on their shows) are relatively easy so they shouldn't scare people off trying them. Not a lot of actual sewing projects and they are heavy on product endorsements, but if you haven't seen an episode of Home Made Simple it is worth checking out.

Pattern Review: McCall's 4066- American Girl Doll Clothes

I sewed this as a gift for my cat-loving niece. I used McCall's 4066. I changed the skirt to an elastic waist (just stretch and sew the elastic to the wrong side- no casing). I serged the hem. The top is a lined wrap, with side snaps. I used a suede like trim. The pattern goes together very easily. It also has pieces for a raincoat, pants and a puffy-sleeve top.

Book Review: Craft Cycle by Heidi Boyd

In honor of Earth Day (everyday), I made a few projects from Craft Cycle by Heidi Boyd. I love this book! Its got innovative projects and recipes! It is divided into seasons with tips on how to be Earth friendly.

I decided to make a coiled basket from old t-shirt scraps (leftover from another project). Mine isn't as large as Heidi's example in the book, but the technique is the same.

I added a few extra bows around the rim- it seemed to need it.

The cats approve of it. Alice wanted to try it first, then Emma had a go, below.

Next, I made fused plastic bags. Instead of the tote from the book, I used the instructions and decided to add a zipper. It was something different to try. I had a couple of bags from when I was in England (1981?!) Each zipper bag requires several plastic bags to start with.

This one is really showing my age- records and tapes!

Here is the zipper top. These were fun projects and I will be trying out the recipes soon. I'm looking forward to making the shoe bracelet, mittens and owl clothespin holder. Any recycled book recommendations?

Moby and the Cats

Its been awhile since I posted any cute pet pictures so...

Here is Alice with Moby the fish. She thinks we got him just for her.

Emma came to investigate too. These were taken a month ago and Moby is still healthy. We keep him on a shelf where the cats can't get him. They still love watching him though.

How Jeans Are made

This article/video, reported on Craftzine shows how jeans are made. WOW! It takes them under 13 minutes to sew a pair of jeans! It takes me way longer, but it is very satisfying. I love the look people give me when I say I made my own. Have you sewn jeans? The pattern I use is Butterick 6437. I have sewn jeans using this pattern using white denim, blue, chambray, cotton print, linen, etc.
